Presentation on Autism Risk at Western Psychological Association
May 21, 2016
Congratulations to Ryan Manning for his poster presentation at the Western Psychological Association in Long Beach, California. Ryan conducted a meta-analysis examining the association between use of anti-depressant medication during pregnancy and risk for child Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). He found that prenatal exposure to antidepressant medication increases risk for ASD, however, additional research is needed to determine if the relationship is causal. This finding adds to a growing body of literature that supports the use of other evidence-based treatments for depression during pregnancy, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), which may provide effective treatment for maternal depression while also promoting fetal health and development. Ryan received his BS in Psychology at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and will begin pursuing his PhD in Neuroscience at UC Davis in the Fall.
